Bicol fishery achievers bag national awards

Three outstanding achievers in the fishery sector in Bicol were given recognition during the Fish Conservation Week 2003 celebrations from October 19 to 25, at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) central office in Quezon City.

headed by Mayor Pepito Lo, recipient of the Gawad Kagalingan Award for Outstanding Local Government Unit; San Andres, Catanduanes OIC municipal agricultural officer Rolly Canada, Gawad Kagitingan Award for Courageous and Selfless Action in Fishery Law Enforcement; and the BFAR Region V Unlad Pangisdaan, School-on-the-Air Program, Gawad Kagalingan Award for Promoting Fishery Programs and Development.
For the Fish Conservation Week celebrations in Bicol, de la Vega said that regional activities were conducted to significantly highlight the occasion.

"BFAR5 conducted fingerling dispersal in the six Bicol provinces, Information Education and Communication (IEC) regional contest for students, public consultation on RA 8550 of the Philippine Fisheries Code and Fisherfolk Leaders Assembly participated in by variious Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils (FARMCs), and lecture series and cooking demos on different fishery technologies," according to de la Vega.
